We have been monitoring the weather forecast, and after careful consideration for shooter safety we have decided to postpone the January match normally scheduled for the 1st Sunday of the month. Sunday’s high temperatures are forecasted to be near or below zero making wind chills dangerously below zero. We plan to re-evaluate weather and range conditions closer to the 3rd Sunday of the month, if conditions improve we will hold our January match on the 3rd Sunday (Jan. 19th). Stay tuned for additional announcements.
Hello Single Stack Shooters,
I have received a few questions in regards to the 2014 SS Nationals. Below is the message I received from our Iowa Section coordinator. Please let me know ASAP if you are interested and I will see how many slots we can get. Depending upon interest, I am betting we (WLPS) will only receive 1 slot. If we have serious interest by more than the slots we are allowed, we will have a lottery to award the spot. Please email me at Greg.email@example.com.
West Liberty Practical Shooters
The Iowa section has been given 5 slots for the 2014 Single Stack Nationals. The deadline for these slots to be received(with payment) by the PASA office is DECEMBER 31, 2013. The deadline for requesting a slot will be December 7, 2013.
It’s FINALLY time to get back to matches again at West Liberty Gun Club! I like to take this time of year to reflect back at the year and give thanks for all of the little, and big, things that go thankless all throughout the year. In reflection this year has been very challenging to say the least, we started out the year with an unplanned barbeque that turned our world upside down with the loss of our clubhouse and all of its contents. So many people have been involved in some way, shape, or form, everyone from the West Liberty fire & police departments to all of you who lent a hand during clean up or even construction of a new temporary structure. I am thankful for all who have helped out in so many ways. And just when things started to get rolling again another set back resulted in suspension of matches at the club for a few months. Again, many of you helped out in sorting through details and developing a path to shooting again. So to all of you, I want to say Thank You! I have to pay a special Thanks to a few of you whom without you this club would not be what it is, Doc and Esther Stock – without your tireless input, help, knowledge, and planning this club, and particularly practical shooting, would not be what it is today. Gary Heaverlo, Charlie Hall, Bill Wilson, Bob Jensen, Bill Beem – your countless hours of set-up, tear down, prop building, and innovation go thankless far too often. Ryan Zeisler – thanks for keeping the stats this year. And to the many many more that have contributed to our sport in so many ways, Thank You all!
So in the spirit of thanks, the West Liberty Practical Shooters would like to invite you, and all of your friends, to come shoot with us Sunday, December 1st for FREE! We will have 6 stages of USPSA fun set-up for your enjoyment. Final round count will be between 120 to 135 rounds. Match set-up will be Saturday, November 30 at 9:00am. I am begging for volunteers, as we have been on hiatus for a few months I am sure we can use all the help we can get. Final set-up on Sunday morning will be at 7:30am with registration (in the new shed) to begin at 8:00am. Please register asap when showing up so that we can get everyone squaded, as we will now have assigned squads. We will have a shooters meeting/safety briefing at 8:45 with first shots at 9:00am.
Let’s send 2013 out with a Bang! I hope to see you all there.
I know many of you have been wondering about the status of practical shooting at West Liberty Gun Club since our hiatus began in late August. Since the last match in early August, the club Board of Directors, City of West Liberty, and our core group of practical shooters have been hard at work analyzing our facilities, range rules, competitive shooting events, any many other factors to improve the safety of our competitors, neighbors, and spectators alike. While no set of rules or regulations could prevent 100% of accidents, we have identified some areas that we can improve upon to make practical shooting matches safer while maintaining the competitive spirit that we all enjoy. Many of the areas that we identified are things that we already do at WLGC , some practices will be new to WLGC. When USPSA sanctioned matches resume at West Liberty Gun Club on Sunday, December 1st, we will be observing a few key points below:
- The match will be conducted using all USPSA safety rules.
- A current version of the rule book can be viewed and downloaded at the USPSA site or by clicking here.
- All stage designs must meet current USPSA standards.
- All stage designs will be submitted to the Match Director or Assistant Match Director in advance.
- After set-up, all stages will be inspected by the match director(s) before shooting begins.
- All shots fired are to be aimed at a target backed up by a berm or sandbags
- When Practical shooting matches are in progress all other ranges on the property will be closed.
- There will be a mandatory safety briefing before each match.
- A NROI certified Range Officer or experienced USPSA shooter will be assigned to each squad.
- New shooters will receive an additional safety briefing and their presence will be announced to the squad.
I am excited to return to the range and get back to shooting, as I am sure many of you are as well. More details will be forthcoming with match specifics.
See you all at the range!
As some of you may know, many may not, during the August USPSA match a rather serious range incident occurred. It seems that during the match a round was shot over a berm and found it’s way into the city of West Liberty. The round went through a window and landed on a bookcase inside a home on the north east side of town. We are extremely lucky that nobody was hurt or injured. While we have an idea where the error likely occurred, it has become necessary to suspend all practical shooting, including the Iowa Fall Classic, at West Liberty Gun Club indefinitely. We continue to work on remediation efforts to ensure this type of mistake can not happen again. It is our duty to our club members, neighbors, citizens, and competitors alike to provide safe shooting facilities and competitions.
For all of you who have pre-registered for the Iowa Fall Classic, I will return your checks within the next week. I apologize for the late notice and any inconvenience this may have caused.
Our goal is to restore all shooting & competitions as soon as possible.
